Planning a Mountain Wedding in Canmore, Banff, or Lake Louise
Everything You Need to Know
The Canadian Rockies provide a breathtaking backdrop for couples seeking a stunning, nature-filled wedding. Whether you envision an intimate elopement by an alpine lake or a grand celebration in a luxury mountain resort, Canmore, Banff, and Lake Louise offer some of the most picturesque venues in the world.
But planning a wedding in the mountains isn’t just about finding a pretty spot—permits, weather, transportation, and vendors all play a crucial role. As a bridal boutique owner in Canmore, I’ve worked closely with some of the best wedding professionals in the area. This guide covers everything you need to know, including my personal recommendations for vendors, venues, and a wedding planning timeline to help you stay on track.
Permits & Legal Requirements for a Mountain Wedding
Marriage License in Alberta
To legally marry in Alberta, couples need a marriage license from a registry agent. This can be obtained within three months of your wedding date. There’s no waiting period and no residency or citizenship requirements.
More details: Alberta Government Marriage License
National Park Permits
If you’re planning a wedding inside Banff National Park, you must follow Parks Canada guidelines. This includes:
✅ Ceremony Registration – Parks Canada requires that weddings in public park spaces are registered to ensure conservation efforts are respected.
✅ Business Licenses for Vendors – Any vendors (photographers, planners, etc.) must have a business license to work in the park.
✅ No Private Areas – You cannot reserve an outdoor location in the park exclusively for your wedding, so plan for potential onlookers.
